Materials Needed for Seed Paper Valentines

To make your own seed paper Valentines, you'll need a few basic materials that are easy to find and affordable. Here's a list of what you'll need:

  1. Paper: Start by collecting any scrap paper you have lying around the house. Old newspapers, printer paper, or construction paper can all be used.

  2. Seeds: Choose seeds that are suitable for the recipient's location and growing conditions. Flower seeds like wildflowers, marigolds, or sunflowers are popular choices. You can also opt for herb or vegetable seeds, looking at what is in season for your area.

  3. Blender: A blender or food processor will be used to pulp the paper and create a smooth, even texture.

  4. Water: You'll need enough water to soak the paper and create the pulp.

  5. Cookie cutters: These will be used to shape the seed paper into hearts or any other desired shape. I found heart cookie cutter at a thrift store.

  6. Screen paper or parchment paper: This will be used to remove excess water from the seed paper and aid in the drying process.

How to Make Your Own Seed Paper Valentines

  1. Collect and prepare the paper: Start by tearing the scrap paper into small pieces and placing them in a large bowl. Add enough water to cover the paper and let it soak. The longer it soaks, the softer the paper will be and make it easier to pulp.

  2. Blend the paper: After soaking, transfer the paper and water mixture into a blender or food processor. Blend on low speed until the mixture becomes a smooth pulp. If the pulp is too thick, you can add more water to achieve the desired consistency. Drain excess water.

  3. Add the seeds: Once you have a smooth pulp, pour it into a separate bowl and add the seeds. Mix well to ensure the seeds are evenly distributed throughout the pulp. The number of seeds you add will depend on personal preference and the size of the paper.

  4. Shape the seed paper: Place your cookie cutter or mold on parchment paper and fill it with the seed paper pulp. Use a sponge or towel to press down and remove any excess water. Gently lift the mold to reveal your seed paper shape. Repeat this process for each Valentine card.

  5. Dry the seed paper: Allow the seed paper to dry completely overnight. Depending on thickness, it may take longer.

  6. Print Card: Print out card and attach heart with tape. You can find the card I created below. When printing, I printed 4 cards per page. Share your handmade cards with your loved ones and friends!

Happy growing and Happy Valentine's Day!
