The Winter Wonders of Farm Camp: Learning, Growing, and Creating Together

Writer's picture: Allie CorreaAllie Correa

When the temperatures drop and the days grow shorter, it’s easy to retreat indoors. But winter provides unique opportunities for children to engage with the natural world, even on a farm. At Arrows Farm, our Mini Farm Camp Day offers a chance for kids to learn about farming, composting, and the joys of creating something with their hands—all while spending meaningful time outdoors.

Why Farm Camp in Winter?

Farm camp isn’t just a summer adventure; it’s a year-round experience! Winter offers its own set of lessons and opportunities:

  1. Time Outside is Vital for Well-Being: Research consistently shows that spending time outdoors improves children’s physical and mental health. Even in the chillier months, fresh air and activity help kids stay energized and engaged. Activities like exploring the farm, tending winter plants, and connecting with nature encourage creativity and curiosity.

  2. Learning About Composting:Winter is an ideal time to teach kids about composting, as the cycle of decomposition doesn’t stop with the seasons. Kids can learn the science behind turning food scraps and plant waste into rich, healthy soil—knowledge they can use at home and for a lifetime. Composting builds environmental awareness, responsibility, and an appreciation for sustainability.

  3. Crafting Memories:This year, campers will create festive ornaments inspired by the garden. Kids will craft keepsakes that symbolize their connection to the land and the season. It’s a hands-on activity that fosters creativity while connecting children to the rhythms of the garden.
